The Outdoors

Private Holiday Management

Villa Segòvia 14 is located in Mas Fumats, a small village that nestles at the foothills of the Pyrenees in the north easterly corner of Spain, approximately a 30 minute drive south of France. This typical Mediterranean development, which was originally farmland, comprises beautifully structured private properties set against a background of olive trees and vineyards with panoramic views to the south of the Bay of Rosas and surrounding countryside.

Local Area

Private Holiday Management

The local area meets varying tastes and requirements, from active pastimes like water skiing or paragliding to horse trekking, walking, sightseeing, wining or dining, or just whiling the time away, relaxing under an olive tree.

The ancient fishing town of Roses, with its beaches was discovered by the ancient Greeks, the town was originally named Rhoda. It certainly lives up to its name as the Rose of the Costa Brava. The remains of the amiptheatre built by the ancient Greeks can be found to the south of the town and occasionally houses plays and concerts. The town, with its narrow streets, is popular with tourists and offers numerous shops selling local wares and many fine restaurants specialising in Catalan cuisine and seafood caught by the local fishermen. The town and its glorious sandy beach lures visitors from all around Europe.

Cadaqués, of which Salvador Dalí said was the most beautiful village in the world, is still unspoiled and remote, despite the publicity it received when Salvador Dalí lived there. The village winds around half a dozen small coves, with a narrow street running along the water's edge. With its crystal-blue water, fishing boats on the sandy beaches, old whitewashed houses, narrow twisting streets, and a 16th-century parish up on a hill you really feel you're off the beaten path. The village is reached by a winding road that twists over the Pyrenees. The road is wonderfully scenic, reaching high into the mountains, presenting fantastic views of the extensive countryside and the Bay of Roses and Mediterranean Sea on one side and sweeping straight into Cadaques on the other side of the mountain. It’s genuinely a lovely drive.

Emporiabrava is the world’s largest residential marina. Built in 1967, its originality lies in the fact that it is structured around a grid-shaped network of navigable canals totalling some 37 km. Many of the properties have private access to the canals so owners can moor their boats at the bottom of their garden. The town offers a wide range of facilities for the tourist, having every type of shop and excellent restaurants as well as fine sandy beaches. The Empuriabrava aerodrome is home to the Costa Brava Parachuting Centre, which is considered to be one of the world’s leading centres. There is also a school for would be pilots of micro-light and light aircraft, which offers aerial rides over the whole region.

Santa Margarida is only a few kilometres east of Empuriabrava and is a similar complex on a smaller scale. There are no restrictions as to the type of craft one has, as there are no bridges and therefore masted vessels can be catered for. Like Empuriabrava, Santa Margarida has fine sandy beaches and a number of restaurants, bars and excellent boat yards. A paved promenade links Santa Margarida to the charming old fishing port of Roses.

Fifteen minutes in other direction is the historic town of Figueres, a quaint town famous for its world famous Salvador Dali museum, shops and cuisine. Figueres also has a train station from where you can travel to other places of interest, including Barcelona, at very reasonable prices.

If golf is of interest there are two championship 18 hole courses only a car’s drive away. Perelada Golf Club, just a 10 minute car drive from the Bay of Roses. It’s a magnificent golf course beside the medieval village of Perelada. This beautiful village has a fully restored castle and gardens, which were a favourite haunt of Franco and are now the home of a casino, restaurant and, during the summer, open air concerts. The village is also famous for its bodegas producing excellent wines and “cava”.

The town of Castello d’Empuries reached the height of its splendour during the middle Ages, after the Counts of Empuries set up residence there in the eleventh century and the town became the county capital. The buildings in the heart of the town, or what is known as the monument district, date back to this early period, and the area still conserves its ‘traditional’ appearance.

Els Aiguamolls de l’Emporda is a natural park in the heart of Castello d’Empuries. The marshlands park extends from the foothills of the Rhoda Mountains in the north to the mouth of the Fluvia Vell river in the south. At nearly 5,000 hectares, it is currently the second largest park in Catalonia. The marshlands are home to a large number of birds and animals, and acts as a haven for many migratory species.

Other activities in the area include Costa Brava’s largest water park; go-kart track; two tennis clubs, with hard and clay courts; basketball, football; squash courts; mini-golf; bowls and cross country cycling.

With the French border just a 20 minute drive away we think you’ll agree that the facilities in and around the area certainly seem to meet the vast range of tastes and requirements demanded from holidaying guests…
